The Mansion at Historic Prospect Place can in no way be described as “ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant,” and because of its age and design, it cannot be made so. There is a set of stone stairs at the main, public entrance to the mansion. No ramp is available or practical at this location. If a wheelchair user is assisted up the stairs and the chair brought inside separately, they will be able to participate in some activities on the first floor, and to be comfortable and safe there. The gift shop and a rest room are available on the first floor. However, the other two interior floors can only be accessed using a steep, winding staircase, and this probably will prevent them from visiting or participating in activities on those floors. The cellar has steep, uneven stairs at its exterior entrance, and the cellar floor is sandy and uneven, so it is essentially inaccessible.
The grounds include maintained areas of grass and gravel, and some dirt paths which are mostly level. Outdoor, daytime activities, such as the Mystic Market on the front lawn, should be navigable by someone in a wheelchair, depending on their strength and dexterity. If someone is pushing the chair, they should not have significant difficulty.
Participation in our events after dark, such as Ghost Hunts, would not be advisable for anyone having limited mobility.
Historic Prospect Place does not generally offer guests food or refreshments. At public events, bottled water may be available for a nominal charge, especially during the hot summer months. During certain daytime events on the grounds, such as the Mystic Market, one or more participating vendors may offer food and/or beverages for purchase by guests.
Guests participating in a Ghost Hunt or a Flashlight Tour may bring their own (non-alcoholic) refreshments and snack foods to the event. We ask that guests distribute or consume food or snacks only in the first-floor parlor or the dining room, and that they dispose of all associated containers and trash in the receptacles provided in those rooms.
A local pizza shop less than a mile away in Dresden will generally deliver pre-paid orders to the Mansion.
An electric coffee maker is available in the first-floor parlor. Other than this, there are no cooking or reheating facilities available to our guests in the Mansion. Grills, firepits, or campfires are not permitted anywhere on the grounds.
During daylight tours, Public or Private Ghost Hunts, and Flashlight Tours, guests may use the rest room located on the first floor. NOTE: Water from the faucet in the rest room is well water and is not potable (is not safe to drink).
During daytime events on the grounds, such as the Mystic Market, a number of portable toilets will be available adjacent to the Mansion, or guests may use the rest room on the first floor of the Mansion.
The Mansion at Historic Prospect Place is not air conditioned, and it can get quite warm inside during the Summer months. Electric fans are present in the first-floor parlor and some other areas and should only be used in those locations.
The Mansion is heated, but during events in the Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November), especially overnight events, it can get chilly. Guests should plan to wear appropriate clothing, and to bring blankets, sleeping bags, and/or inflatable mattresses as desired for overnight events.
Cellular service, including 5G, is generally good in the area, though this may depend on your cellular carrier and/or weather conditions.
Free guest WiFi is available in the Mansion; ask a staff member for the guest WiFi password. Electric outlets for charging phones and other devices are available in most rooms of the Mansion.
Cigarettes can be smoked outside, adjacent to the main entrance stairs to the Mansion; a container for cigarette butts is provided for your use in that location. Vaping is permitted in the same area. Smoking or vaping is not permitted anywhere inside the Mansion.
The use of drugs, including cannabis, and consumption of alcohol are not permitted in the Mansion or anywhere on the grounds of Historic Prospect Place.
The following are also not permitted:
- Guns or other weapons
- Fireworks of any kind
- Ouija boards, smudging materials, or provoking tools
- Items with an open flame, such as wax candles, oil lamps, or non-electric lanterns
- Electric or kerosene-, gasoline-, alcohol-, or propane-fueled radiant heaters
Video cameras associated with our security system are installed in most areas of the Mansion (except the rest room) and outside to ensure the safety of all guests, and to prevent vandalism. Please be aware that guest activities may be observed by Estate staff at any time, without any additional notice, in and around the Mansion.
Some areas both inside and outside the Mansion are locked and/or clearly marked NO ENTRY, PRIVATE, or with caution tape. GUESTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER THESE AREAS. The structures on the Estate were built in the mid-1800s, more than 150 years ago. Some of these marked areas are structurally unsound due to age and deterioration, and may expose guests to injury and/or death. Others are in the process of being restored, or are reserved exclusively for use by Estate staff. Guests found to have accessed these areas or violated these posted notices in any way will be removed and trespassed from the premises.
With the exception of trained and identified service animals, dogs and other animals are not permitted in the Mansion. They are, however, welcome outside on the grounds during public events. When outside, dogs should be leashed and under their owners’ control at all times.
For the care, safety, and comfort of all animal guests (service animals and otherwise), owners are asked to accompany them outside on the grounds when they need to relieve themselves, and to collect animal feces in a sealed bag and to dispose of them in the trash container at the front entrance.
Guests are reminded to bring a bowl and fresh water for their pets, as the well water available in the Mansion is not potable (is not safe to drink).
Under no circumstances will Historic Prospect Estate or its staff be responsible for injury to pets, service animals, or human guests as a result of the presence or activities of animal guests on the grounds of the Estate.
In the event of a medical, fire, or police emergency while on the grounds of Historic Prospect Place, please call Muskingum County 9-1-1 and provide our address, 12150 Main Street (County Road 706) in Trinway. To contact a staff member to report these or any other issues, please call (740) 202-1909 immediately. Please do not email us under these circumstances, as we may not see your message immediately.
